Apa Legacy Initiative Awards Scholarships to 100 Benue South Students
On November 10, 2024, Otukpo played host to the inaugural edition of the Apa Legacy and Sustainability Initiative scholarship program, aimed at supporting underprivileged students from Benue South Senatorial District. The initiative, a project by Hon. David Adejoh Olofu Ph.D, former Benue State Commissioner for Finance, awarded N100,000 each to 100 students attending public tertiary institutions across Nigeria, spanning the nine LGAs of Benue South.
The scholarship scheme, envisioned as a five-year program, seeks to expand access to education, provide academic resources, and improve the learning outcomes of students from low-income families. Hon. Olofu stressed the importance of this initiative, expressing that financial support for students could help reduce dropout rates and foster academic achievement.
The event was chaired by Professor David Salifu of the Federal University of Wukari, who heads the Apa Legacy Sustainability Initiative. Sir Bernard Omaiye, a former Commissioner for Education, presided over the program, and Dr. Godwin Oyiwona, former Benue State Commissioner for Water Resources, served as the guest speaker. Dr. Oyiwona inspired the students and attendees with remarks on the importance of education in community development, urging all stakeholders to support educational programs in the region.
Other prominent figures at the event included Hon. Baba Otache, former member of the Benue House of Assembly; Comrade Abba Adaudu, a well-known entrepreneur and supporter of youth initiatives; and Hon. Owoicho Oyi, Secretary of the Apa Legacy Scholarship Scheme. Each expressed support for Hon. Olofu’s efforts, commending his commitment to improving the educational landscape in Benue South.
In his address, Hon. Olofu emphasized that the initiative is designed not only to support students financially but also to enhance community engagement and encourage collaboration between schools, families, and communities to promote student success. He called on leaders and organizations within Benue South to recognize education’s vital role in shaping the district's future and to consider similar contributions.
The scholarship program, which is exclusive to students from Benue South, aims to foster educational growth in the region and equip students with the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.
